Leona M. Heavens
(May 18, 1917 – October 14, 2009)

Leona M. Heavens, 92, of Coal City, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Heritage Manor in Dwight. Leona was born on May 18, 1917 in Coal City to the late August and Nathalie (DeVoss) Henke. Leona was raised and educated in Coal City where she lived her entire life. She graduated from Coal City High School, class of 1935. Leona was married to Gerald T. Heavens on July 9, 1938 at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City.

As a life-long member of Assumption Catholic Church, Leona was active in the Assumption School Mothers' Club, the Altar and Rosary Society, and a member of the Marthas.

Leona was a homemaker, an excellent cook and seamstress. She worked part-time at Montgomery Ward Catalog Agency in Coal City. Leona was also a member of a social Pinochle Club called the DB Club as well as playing cards with family and friends. Leona was an avid fan of the Chicago Bulls. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed dining out with her relatives and friends.

Surviving are her children, Gerald (Donna) Heavens of Coal City; Patti Testa of Tempe, AZ; four grandchildren, Craig Heavens of Plainfield, IL, Julie (Kent) Jensen of Dwight, IL, Shawn Testa of Warsaw, MO, and Jennifer (Ryan) Swincicki of Florham Park, NJ; eight great-grandchildren, Lilyana Testa, Megan and Drew Jensen, Hailey and Jared Heavens, and Ethan, Colin, and Macyn Swincicki. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald, February 12, 1989; brothers, John, Frank, and Raymond; sisters, Anna Shear, Helen Bertani, and Esther Stefko.
