Joann Daniels, age 93, of Coal City, IL passed away peacefully at the Arc of Dwight on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
Born in Coal City on April 3, 1932, Joann was the youngest child of John and Mary (nee Elberts) Thom. She grew up and was schooled in Coal City, graduating with the class of 1951. She then married Bill Daniels at the Coal City Methodist Church on November 29, 1951 and Bill went off to the Korean War and Joann went to work at the Joliet Arsenal. Upon his return, they built a home a few blocks from her birthplace and raised their family where they resided their entire life.
Joann and Bill had an idyllic life raising their three children and traveling around the world on vacations. They were very committed to the Coal City Methodist Church and always available to help out when needed. She especially liked going to the Evening Star Circle meetings and helping out with meals.
Always eager to help, Joann will be remembered for her generosity, warmth and kindness by those that knew her and a lot of acquaintances who just crossed her path. She could talk to anyone and people just automatically trusted her. It wasn't unusual to find her standing in a grocery store checkout holding an unknown woman's baby and helping her solve some problem.
Joann is survived by her three children, Cynthia (Roger) Bossler of Rio Rancho, NM, Greg Daniels and Bill (Laura) Daniels, both of Coal City; grandchildren, Heather (Chuck) Harvey, Jennifer Brooks, Kate (Kevin) Campbell, Emelia (Mike) Suess, Allison (Jeremy) Nugent and great-grandchildren, Malea, Flynn, Cora, Ronan, Orrin, Lazarus, Eleanor, Wyatt, Tess, Carlie, Debora, Audrina, Greysen, Burke, Aubry and Koen. Also surviving is her cousin and great friend, Herbie Palmer.
Preceding her in death was her beloved husband of 69 years, Bill; a grandson, Jason Brooks; her parents; brothers and sisters, Marie Thom, Agnes (Tom) Reay, Herbert (Vi) Thom, Albert (Marge) Thom and John Thom; all her in-laws and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Monday, July 14, 2025 from 9:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am at the Coal City United Methodist Church, 6805 East McArdle Road, Coal City, IL 60416. Ken P. Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at Braceville Gardner Cemetery where Joann will be laid to rest with her late husband, Bill.
