Gary A. Simons, 69, of Coal City, passed away Monday, April 4, 2016 at Morris Hospital.
He was born on August 21, 1946 in Amboy, Illinois to Clifford Simons and Theresa Grennan Unger. He served his country honorably as a Sergeant in the United States Airforce during the Vietnam era. Gary married Kathleen Leve on January 22, 1966 at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City, where he had served as an alter boy in his youth. He was a member of and was very involved with the Carpenters Union Local #916. He held a second degree blackbelt in Shori-Go-Ju and was also a Martial Arts instructor. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and was a Mark Martin fan. He liked playing cards and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathleen; two daughters Carla Stiles and Katy Cora; grandchildren Courtney Simons, Cameron Stiles, Chelsea Cora and Chase Cora; three great-grandchildren Ava, Savannah and Dakota; a sister Donna (Sam) Gervase and a brother Leonard Simons; a brother-in-law Roy (Sharon) Leve and a sister-in-law Judy (Louie) Campo; and his step-brothers and sister Edward (Jacki) Unger Jr., Linda (Jim-deceased) Zelinko, Mike (Kellie) Unger and Jerry (Janice) Unger. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather Edward Unger Sr., a son-in-law Jeff Cora; a nephew Cody Simons and mother and father-in-law Marie and Roy Leve.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Gary's name to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Squadron, 20953 W. Hoff Road, Elwood IL. 60421 or the Assumption Catholic Church Building Fund , 245 S. Kankakee Street, Coal City, IL. 60416 or the charity of the donor's choice.
Funeral service will be Friday, April 8, 2016 from the Ferrari Funeral Chapel at 9:00 a.m. to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church (245 S. Kankakee St., Coal City) for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. with Father Robert Noesen officiating. Burial will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Visitation will be Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Ferrari Funeral Services (Corner of Spring Road and Ferrari Drive) from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
