Obituary
Dennis Mark Neary, 66, of Coal City passed away Sunday, October 2, 2016 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.
Dennis was born July 11, 1950 in Morris to Edwin and Marilyn (Manning) Neary. He attended Morris schools and Joliet Junior College. He married Cathy L. Johnson on May 12, 1973 in Morris.
Dennis started his career in law enforcement with the Grundy County Sheriff's Department under Sheriff Jake Olson. He was then hired as a police officer in Coal City on October 23, 1972. He served as Chief of Police in Coal City for 30 years. Among many of his duties, Dennis was an instructor with the D.A.R.E program at Coal City Schools. He served 35 years with the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department, serving many of those years as Captain. He was an EMT for 6 years. Most recently, he worked the past 8 years in security for Morris Hospital. In 2002 Dennis received the Coal City Community Service Award.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed organizing many fundraisers. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, family vacations and Sundays.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cathy; his mother Marilyn Neary Kneller of Morris; two sons Brandon (Andrea) Neary of Coal City and Christopher Neary of CA; grandchildren Kylie, Caden and Kinley Neary; sisters Jill (Ray) Odom of Morris, Jane (Roland) Stott, Morris and Lisa (Jeff Callaway) Neary of Ottawa; brothers Tim (the late Sally) Neary and Mike (Lori) Neary both of Morris; mother in law Dona Hunt of Morris; brother and sister in law Larry (Troy Speed) Johnson, FL. and Carla (Wayne) McClintock, Morris; aunt Carole Baudino of Morris and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Neary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Dennis' name.
Funeral service will be Friday, October 7th 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church (4470 E. Rt. 113 ) Coal City with Rev. Robert Noesen officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, October 6th from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. also at the First Baptist Church. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral service.
